No One Fights Alone
Have you ever wanted to participate in something that could change lives of local families in crisis? The SJ5K is the answer to that wish. This student-led event supports Plymouth-Canton community families in crisis by bringing community support, raising funds, and developing student leadership. Let it inspire you to change the world, too.
In 2011, then-Canton sophomore Jesse Lindlbauer (known as Super Jess) suffered a near-fatal brain abscess. Despite no previous symptoms, Jesse fought brain trauma, meningitis, and other complications brought on by an infected abscess.
Jesse spent eleven weeks at C.S. Mott Hospital defying all odds surviving two emergency brain surgeries and then began his long road to recovery. With the amazing support of others, the Lindlbauer family understood the power of community.
In their darkest hour, then-Salem senior Tommy Halewicz began planning the first SJ5K aiming for 500 participants. Tommy enlisted the help of adults and students at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park (P-CEP) to help make his vision for helping Jesse a reality. After months of planning and 100 volunteers, the first SJ5K exceeded all expectations with over 1,800 runners raising more than $45,000 for Jesse’s road to recovery. The funds supported the purchase of a handicap accessible van and major home modifications, among others.
The following year it was decided that the event in Jesse’s name would continue on to help other Plymouth-Canton families in crisis. Since 2011, the SJ5K has raised over a half a million dollars. Ninety-percent of proceeds from the event go directly to support a family in the Plymouth-Canton community to benefit survivors- families who fight on each day through medical cries.
The event continues to be organized by P-CEP high school students, and supported by Plymouth-Canton community volunteers and local businesses.
